Ten-Item Wardrobe Winter Updates + Packing For England

I'm sharing ten-item winter wardrobe updates in today's video as well as packing for an upcoming trip to England. I'm trying to pack minimally while still preparing for the extreme change in weather.

As we move into another change in season it's time to retire clothing from the prior season and make plans for what's new. For winter, I am retiring the Everlane Japanese picnic dress and the Target Wild Fable dress. These dresses performed really well this past season. I am retiring them due to their fall colors. I will pack them away and look forward to bringing them back next fall.

I have retired two core items and am bringing one back in. I have decided to bring back the LL Bean dot dress as it is very versatile, a dark winter color, and easy to layer for the colder months. Even though this is not the most exciting change, I do feel happy and comfortable with this returning piece. As you do the ten-item wardrobe, you will become content with less.

Now let's talk about packing for England. For a 3 week trip I have decided to bring only five core items: one pair of dark denim jeans (JLS10 for 10% off) and four dresses (LL Bean dress, midnight floral dress (linking similar), Velvet plaid dress, and J.Jill charcoal wrap dress).

These are the extras I am bringing... remember extras compliment your core items:
Two cashmere sweaters (Mott & Bow red cashmere code JLS10 gives 10% off and Everlane camel v-neck cashmere), 3 pairs of pajamas, including the Leimere cashmere pajama , Mersea travel wrap (for the plane), and fleece tights. I am also bringing a faux fur infinity scarf (linking similar here). I would have loved to bring my SKYE Coraline trench (Jennifer20 for 20% off ) because it goes with all of my outfits, but it is too lightweight for the heavy winter weather in England. I will look forward to wearing that trench when I get back to California.

The dress I'm wearing in today's video is by Draper James and the earrings are by Ana Luisa (code Jennifer10 for $10 off).

Comment of the Week
Carolyn M. writes, "The most common comment that I receive if I dress nicely on a regular day is an inquiry as to whether I have returned to working outside of the home. When I mention that I am still an at home mother, I mostly get a look of confusion, like why would a woman dress up if she is a homemaker?"

Hello Carolyn, I loved your comment. Every time you answer that question you plant a seed in someone's mind about the importance of dressing well daily, regardless of what you are doing. You are bringing dignity to your home life! Thank you.

I hope you enjoyed today's ten-item wardrobe video. Share your ten-item wardrobe updates with us and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog. See you soon!

The Biggest Style Critique I Get from My Viewers

I've been sharing my ten-item wardrobe on YouTube for over 8 years now. For the most part, I receive kind comments, even if my style differs from that of the viewer. My intention with sharing my outfits on YouTube is to showcase how a ten-item capsule wardrobe works in real life and also to inspire people to look presentable always.

Every now and then I get a specific critique on the way that I dress. It's pretty much the only critique I get, which sparks my interest. What is behind this critique? And will it change the way I dress going forward? Watch today's video to find out.

My earrings are SKYE Odette 18K gold pearl earrings Jennifer20 for 20% off.

My dress is by Everlane .

Nancy F. gives us an update on The Chic Assignment in her household: "I have never heard of Caspar David Frederich. However his works are so touching and hauntingly beautiful. I personally fell in love with the one called the morning. Also I have not been able to stop staring at the one called the Abbey in the Oakwood. Now the Bach piece that you featured is one that I have listen to many times over and have decided to re-fall in love with it. One thing that I will definitely be making homemade from scratch is my homemade hot cocoa peppermint meringue cookies that my fiancé and future mother-in-law love. I have definitely changed up my seasonal skin care. The main thing I have changed is I have went to a thicker facial moisturizer that is by ponds. I’m using more luxurious thick creams to combat my dry skin"

Thank you for sharing your findings, Nancy! I look forward to the check-in so we can discuss the assignments more.

Outfits of the Week + New Charm Bracelet

I'm sharing another week of outfits from my fall ten-item capsule wardrobe in today's video. It was an odd week, with each day at nearly 90 degrees F! I'm sorry I am not showing you boots and coats but the weather here is not there yet. I'll make up for it when we travel to England this winter...

I'm also exploring the world of charm bracelets today. I have always loved the look of charm bracelets and love the tinkling sound they make even more. I chose the components of this bracelet from Jeulia Jewelry (code JENNIFERAV15 gives 15% off).

The bracelet is composed of the basic bangle sterling silver bracelet, starry night safety chain, and heart with blue stone charm. Their sterling silver bracelets are delightful!

Here are the outfits for this week:

On Sunday I'm wearing the J.Jill charcoal wrap dress with a braided headband and navy ballet flats (linking similar). On my nails: Vendetta by Londontown (code JenniferS gives 25% off first-time orders) and my phone case is Casetify

On Monday I'm wearing the Everlane Japanese picnic dress over a half-tee with my nude patent sandals and Ana Luisa earrings (code Jennifer10 gives $10 off first-time orders)

On Tuesday I'm wearing the Zara tunic dress (linking similar) with black leggings and a velvet scrunchie.

On Wednesday I'm wearing the Burgundy floral dress with a navy cardigan, navy bow sandals (similar), and Ana Luisa earrings

On a blustery Thursday I'm wearing Cream v-neck cashmere sweater code JLS10, black cropped jeans code JLS10 for 10% off, nude ballet flats, infinity belt

On Friday it's the Midnight floral dress (similar) under a cropped twist black tee for a new layered look. In my hair is the velvet scrunchie.

I hope you enjoy today's video and that it gives you capsule wardrobe inspiration.

Comment of the Week
Kathleen writes, "If we spend one-third of our time sleeping, then a little arithmetic may be in order: spend one-third of your fashion budget on sleepwear. (Not all at once! Over time; and be frugal and wise in your choices.) For fun, set aside a special portion of your closet for these clothes and a special drawer (lined with, say, Crabtree & Evelyn scented paper) so that pajamas and nightgowns are not crammed up against a sea of sweats, and bathrobes are not posted on a hook behind some hidden door. Thanks so much. I may be a surgeon, but I'm a homemaker first. And chic, I hope. I love your channel. Look forward to every post. Doc"

Laundry with a Capsule Wardrobe is SO Important

The other day, I had a sobering incident with the laundry. You might be wondering, is it possible to have a sobering incident with laundry? Yes, it is. Especially if you have a capsule wardrobe.

I was in one of those "mom" moments. The children needed me for various things at the same time and I had about a dozen pressing items on my to-do list. I just needed to throw in a load of laundry so I wouldn't get behind.

I normally wash my clothes separately from my family's clothing. After all, you never know what could be lurking in their laundry, even if you've gone through it carefully.

On this day, however, I was in a rush, so I combined my clothes with my children's clothes. Half-way through the wash, I realized I used the "normal" cycle (I normally wash my clothes on cold on the delicate cycle). But that's not the worst of it. When I went to take my clothes out of the washer, I noticed a strange substance was covering my garments.

Watch today's video to find out what it was.

I was thankfully able to save my Draper James chambray dress, but it was a close call. I also show you how I care for my new Everlane dress in today's video. I hope you enjoy and take on my cautionary tale. Laundry is very important when you have a capsule wardrobe.

The earrings I'm wearing in today's video are by Rachelyn Jewelry. And here is a link to my favorite steamer.

Joselle P. writes, "I have been reading parts of Connoisseur Kids with my 6 year old daughter and 4 year old son. Last night, without even asking her to, my daughter fed our dog, set the table (folded the napkins and everything) and set our glasses of water for everyone. Wow!!! I was just blown away. Reading your book in small chunks is so much more effective than me exasperatedly begging for help. Total life changer. Thank you, Jennifer!!"

Ten-Item Capsule Wardrobe Talk-Through | Fall 2019

I'm talking through my fall ten-item capsule wardrobe in today's video. This year saw many new pieces, more than any in the past due to the reset I was desiring after having worn maternity/ nursing clothes for so many years.

I hope you enjoy today's video.

Core item no. 1 Everlane dress (I am also providing a link for a budget option that is a perfect dupe). The color and length of this dress are my favorite aspects of it. It's perfect for fall and will also look great with an oversize sweater and riding boots.

Core item no. 2 Plaid dress by Velvet by Graham & Spencer (earrings are by Ana Luisa Jewelry code Jennifer10 gives you $10 off your first order). Navy croc ballet flats are no longer available, linking similar here. This dress reminds me of the Duchess of Cambridge. I just love it! Chic, simple, and regal.

Core item no. 3 Draper James denim chambray shift dress paired with leopard sandals. This dress is so effortless. I love it.

Core item no. 4 wrap dress by J.Jill is great for the fall and winter seasons and will be fun to accessorize. Extras: brown riding boots (linking similar). I am so glad I walked in to J.Jill . I am looking forward to wearing this dress during fall and winter. It will be fun to style and accessorize.

Core Item no. 5 Burgundy floral boho dress from Target. extras: tie-waist sweater, Blondo ankle boots. This has a wonderful bohemian vibe and is so far the most worn item in my capsule wardrobe. I love wearing this particularly at home. It's so comfortable, yet presentable.

Core item no. 6 Black button cinched waist tunic dress (Zara in store) linking similar here and here. Extras: black leggings, ballet flats. I've worn this twice so far and each time have been so happy with it. It also has washed well.

Core Item no. 7 Loft blouse I am very happy I decided to go with my gut and purchase this blouse. I bought it at a significant discount and had to ask myself if I was getting it because it was on sale, or because I love it. Well, I love it! It's very flattering and makes jeans look so presentable.

Core item no. 8 Midnight blue floral dress linking similar here and here. This was from my extreme budget wardrobe from two years ago and I still love it. I'm looking forward to styling it creatively this fall and winter.

Core item no. 9
Mott & Bow dark wash denim jeans
use code JLS10 for 10% off first time orders extras featured: tan tunic tee is from Zara, but I am linking a similar one, and tan pashmina (linking similar)
These particular jeans fit so well and I love the crop.

Core item no. 10 Mott & Bow black denim Extras: Mott & Bow cashmere v-neck. Use code JLS10 for 10% off first time orders for Mott & Bow.

Also featured in the video: my phone case is by Casetify . My eye makeup is by The Organic Skin Co. (shade burnish).

Comment of the Week

Noelia writes, "I think this is your best 10 item wardrobe to date. I love every single piece in it. I also just wanted to say a massive thank you to you for bringing the 10 item wardrobe into our lives. I’ve been watching your videos for years but only a couple of months ago I discovered your blog. I started reading it from the beginning and then I bought your book “Lessons from Madame Chic” where you also talk about the 10 item wardrobe. And then, I “got it”. I finally understood what you have been saying all along. I have never had many clothes but I used to save my nicest ones for “best” and used to wear just cheap or old ones on an everyday basis. This Autumn I have decided to really give it a go and, 3 weeks in, I know this is it for me. I will not go back to buying because it’s on a sale or because I “need” to have it. I will be more mindful of my purchases now and will wear all of my clothes because every day is that “best”. Thanks for all of your hard work about this. I really appreciate it. 😊"

Noelia, your comment was so encouraging and the most liked comment on YouTube. I am so excited to hear how your ten-item wardrobe journey goes!
